#3 On pages 107-109 Junior tells us more of Penelope's, and he learns her secret . Explain the situation and why he says ".. she's scared all the time, but nobody will let her be scared..."(108)

Penelope is a bulimic, which means that she has bulimia where oneself eats a lot of food in a small amount of time and forces oneself to rid it by throwing up. Junior says that Penelope is scared to let her be scared because Penelope is the cool girl. "But Penelope was so popular, especially for a freshman...that roger invited us to come along." (Sherman 123) In this quote it shows that Penelope has a reputation to maintain, and if she shows her fear she would be known as an outcast and suddenly not "COOL". Therefore, because of Penelope's reputation she is scared of bulimia making her not popular.

  1. I strongly agree with you Timmy, since Penelope is very popular she doesn't want to show that she is scared, which she thinks might make her unpopular. I think that Junior is trying to say that you should always be yourself. Just like Junior is. Penelope is under peer pressure which also happens a lot everywhere. I feel like Penelope should just be herself and maybe people will still like her.

  2. I agree with everything you said except your last sentence. I believe that "nobody will let her be scared" because people look up to Penelope and wish that they looked like her. I guess your way of looking at it is correct but I would interpret other ways of how being bulimic will make her unpopular. Don't you think it is strange that she wants to leave Reardan but at the same time not lose her reputation in Reardan because if she leaves, everyone will forget about her. This is a real live situation.
    Good Start,
    Noah

  3. I agree. Penelope is the most popular kid in school, and she is ashamed that Junior sees her throwing up, because people might think she's gross. Also, Junior seems to not like anorexics that much anyway, "They think being anorexic makes them feel special, makes them better than everybody else. They have their own fricking Web sites where they give advice on the best laxatives and stuff." Penelope is afraid of showing junior her bulimia, because she thinks he likes anorexics.
